A minimum of thirteen passengers perish and ninety-eight wounded in train crash in Mexico.

A deadly train derailment in the Mexican state of Oaxaca has resulted in the deaths of at least 13 people, an incident expected to reignite opposition criticisms regarding the pace and execution of the country's key public works projects.

The accident occurred on the Interoceanic Train, a route built to link the Atlantic and Pacific Ocean across the thinnest stretch of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This project was intended to offer an different freight railway path to the Panama Canal, with the goal of spurring commercial progress in the area.

“We are going to meticulously determine the cause of this tragedy,” affirmed the head of state.

The official announced that, of the approximately 250 passengers on board, another 98 were hurt, with five of those in grave condition. The president noted plans to go to Oaxaca to confer with those involved.

Key Undertaking of Former Government

The Interoceanic Train was a cornerstone infrastructure project of the previous administration, whose term concluded the prior year. This rail line was a hallmark of his leadership's strategic vision for the southern region.

Another massive train initiative from that period, a passenger and freight circuit around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also integral to the wider plan to kickstart the economy of a relatively poorer part of the country.

Project Execution and Risks Apprehensions

The development of both train projects was supervised by the army, marking a dramatic expansion of its responsibilities in national projects. They were executed at an fast-tracked speed, beating expectations to be at least partly opened before the end of that government.

However, this rushed timetable had concurrently sparked ongoing apprehensions over operational security.

  • Sunday's derailment was the third occurrence on the Interoceanic Train in the current year.
  • This encompasses an earlier collision this month when a train hit a truck at a level crossing.
  • The other major rail project has also had two non-deadly derailments.

Calls for Review and Suspension

In the aftermath of the catastrophe, the head of a major opposition party called for an urgent pause in the building and running of all similar projects.

This stoppage was requested pending a comprehensive technical review. The party declared that the loss of life "calls for swift accountability."

In reply, the president asserted that the train had been operating in total accordance with all safety requirements. Assurances were given that the government would continue to be "responsible" in both the construction and running of these strategic projects.
