“It was regrettable. It was kind of an interaction with our fans seated near me,” Jones explained during a Tuesday interview. “Present was a swarm of Dallas supporters—not New York fans, our fans. The entire stadium was brimming with enthusiasm for the Dallas team.”
He further clarified that the gesture was completely unintentional, happening amid the elation following the team’s final touchdown. “I just showed the incorrect digit,” he remarked. “It was accidentally done. I’m not kidding. Should you call it accidental, you can. However, it got corrected rapidly.”
League Precedent for Owner Penalties
This is not the first time an league proprietor has been penalized for inappropriate behavior. Recent cases include:
- Carolina Panthers proprietor Tepper was fined $300,000 for tossing a beverage at spectators in early 2024.
- Then Tennessee Titans proprietor Adams received a $250,000 fine in 2009 for a comparable obscene gesture.
